BREAST CANCER RETREAT SUMMARY
With the goal of increasing our visibility and increasing the interactions between breast cancer researchers within the Cancer Center, Drs. Ruth A. Keri, PhD and
Mark W. Jackson, PhD
organized the first annual Breast Cancer Retreat on October 5 at Squire Valleevue Farm. Over 35 researchers participated in the day-long event, which included talks and posters devoted to "Translation Research", "Molecular Mechanisms of Breast Cancer" and "Breast Cancer Models". Areas of overlap between numerous investigators were noted, and included Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition, HER2 biology and stem and progenitor fates in cancer.
There was significant discussion during the "Planning Session" about the development of Breast Cancer Working Groups to promote multi-investigator studies aimed at positioning interacting scientists for collaborative grants, and preparing for new RFA announcements. Options for establishing working groups were presented, with an idea development seminar/social hour option favored among the group. Discussion also centered on promoting translational research by stimulating interactions between Basic and Clinical scientists.
