Optimal strategies in cancer screening and detection are constantly evolving and best practices are changing. This update is aimed at primary care providers with guides that can be incorporated into their practices.

  • There are new screening technologies, particularly to detect breast and lung cancer.
  • Current guidelines for colorectal, skin, lung, breast, and cervical cancer screening will be reviewed.
  • The impact of the Affordable Care Act and racial and economic disparities on cancer detection will be addressed.
  • There will be discussion of when to refer a patient for a genetics referral or to a high risk clinic.
 
  1. Incorporate into practice the screening guidelines for:
    • Lung cancer
    • Colon cancer
    • Cervical cancer
    • Skin cancer
  2. Recall that for breast cancer:
    • Annual mammograms remain the standard
    • Tomosynthesis aids early breast cancer detection
    • MRI should be used to screen high risk women
    • New Screening modalities are being developed
  3. Refer appropriate patients to Genetic Specialists for testing and counseling
  4. Appreciate the impact of health disparities on cancer screening and detection rates
