BEHAVIORAL MEASUREMENT CORE FACILITY

Director: Susan A. Flocke, PhD
Associate Professor, Family Medicine

Services

The Behavioral Measurement Core Facility supports clinical, prevention, and other cancer research by assisting investigators in behavioral research methods including identifying or adapting existing measures of behavioral constructs or, when needed, developing new instruments to fit investigator research questions and hypotheses. Qualitative and mixed methods study designs are also supported. More specifically, the core supports the following services:

  • Access to a library of existing behavioral measures relevant for cancer research
  • Expert-guided searches and critical evaluation of concept-driven measures
  • Psychometric evaluation of existing measures, modified measures, and the development of new quantitative measures
  • Assistance with the planning, conduct, collection, and analysis of qualitative data to aid new instrument development
  • Assistance with the planning, conduct, collection, and analysis of mixed methods studies to aid new instrument development
  • Psychometric and statistical analysis of behavioral measures as outcome and predictor variables
  • Behavioral measurement expertise in support of project and grant development
  • Assistance in the preparation of behavioral data for presentation or publication

The Behavioral Measurement Core Facility provides expertise in the development of new measures, and in the evaluation and interpretation of new, modified or established behavioral variables. In addition to measurement consultations, the core's evolving instrument database ensures that copies of important behavioral instruments are available on-site, for immediate access by investigators. The availability of the database allows investigators to streamline the research process, reduces the turnaround time for project development, and ensures inclusion of instruments that are both psychometrically sound and well documented in the literature. The Behavioral Measurement Core Facility is available to all members of the Cancer Center but is particularly relevant for investigators engaged in epidemiological, clinical, or prevention and control research.
