FUNDING OPPORTUNITY – Leukemia Research Foundation

The Leukemia Research Foundation is currently accepting applications for New Investigator Grants. New investigators are considered to be within seven (7) years of their first independent position. Years as a resident physician, fellow physician, or post-doctoral fellow are considered to be training years. Investigators with a research associate, research assistant or similar position, must include a letter from the department chair confirming their position is independent. In addition, the applicant must state how their research is independent from others at their institution. Applicants with an NIH K08 or K23 are NOT excluded.

Investigators with NIH R01 funding, VA Merit Award or equivalent are ineligible to apply. Anyone with funding from other national foundations, career development awards (ACS, ASH, etc.), any outside funding that is in excess of $125,000 per year, excluding startup funds are also ineligible.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY –ACS Joseph S. Silber Fellowship

The purpose of the American Cancer Society Joseph S. Silber Fellowship is to expose students to the burden of cancer with the intent that cancer research will become a lifelong interest and/or pursuit. This fellowship is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are attending an institution in or around Cuyahoga County, Ohio which trains research fellows and has established training programs in the areas of basic or clinical research.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY –Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI)

Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) are intended to foster the early career development of postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. Applicants are expected to draw upon their training in a scientific field other than biology to propose innovative approaches to answer important questions in the biological sciences. Proposals that include experimental validation of theoretical models are particularly encouraged.

An institution (including its affiliated hospitals or research institutes) may nominate up to FOUR candidates. If the institution nominates more than two, then at least one of the candidates must be a female and at least one of the candidates must be a member of an underrepresented minority group**.

This is a multi-college funding opportunity. The SOM Proposal Selection Committee will review and rank submissions and forward to the Provost's Office. Final nominees will be selected by a review panel to be convened by Deputy Provost Lynn Singer.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS – Best of San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is pleased to present the Best of San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium on Wednesday, February 13 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Independence, Ohio. This symposium is an international meeting of laboratory and clinical investigators, dedicated to the presentation of the latest research findings in breast cancer. Basic and translational studies that improve our understanding of breast cancer, as well as practice-changing clinical trials, are presented and discussed. The review course will summarize the highlights of the 2007 SABCS, with a focus on the clinical implications of the new information presented at this meeting.

Medical oncologists, breast surgeons, radiation oncologists, and other health care providers with an interest in the management of patients with breast cancer should attend this course.

On January 18th, the CSCRM circulated a query to determine your interest in meeting regarding pluripotency vectors, etc. There seems to be a considerable amount of interest. The first meeting to discuss this initiative will be at noon on Monday, February 11, in the Wolstein Board Room 2-505. Please plan to attend this meeting even if your interest was to be involved in only a portion of the initiative.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY – William Bingham Foundation

The William Bingham Foundation, which makes grants to nonprofit organizations in Cleveland and other areas across the United States, is accepting applications for its 2008 funding priority, which is to assist organizations working to increase access to health care and services for low-income breast cancer patients, particularly in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. This focus is in effect only for 2008.

Qualifying organizations will have no prior relationship with the William Bingham Foundation, and projects should seek to improve healthcare access through public education, diagnosis, treatment, and other means. Program activities can include breast cancer prevention and education programs, medical services for low-income women diagnosed with breast cancer, and support services for low-income breast cancer patients.

The maximum grant amount is $25,000. The deadline for applications is April 30

MESSAGE FROM DR. GEORGE STARK

Dear Colleagues,
Do you know of a good student or postdoctoral fellow who might be interested in working in my lab in the near future? We have some nice new results from experiments in which we use promoter insertional mutagenesis to generate mutant cell lines resistant to drugs currently in clinical standard of care or under study as chemotherapeutic agents in cancer. We hope to discover the nature of proteins whose upregulation mediates resistance to specific drugs, and then continue from there to work on mechanisms and clinical relevance. There are many opportunities to study many drugs in collaboration with local scientists. I have just managed to put together funds for someone to join Sarmishtha De, a postdoctoral fellow already working with me on this project, and would like to recruit an additional fellow fairly soon. I am sending this inquiry locally first, before searching outside Cleveland. Please let me know if you are aware of someone with the skills and interest to participate in this project.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY – Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has joined in a national effort to advance the science of continuous quality improvement (CQI) research, and is currently seeking proposals that:

*develop methods, tools and standards for the design, conduct and reporting of CQI research and evaluations, including standardized typologies, definitions and measures of key concepts and consensus statements;

*demonstrate how the paradigms, methods and approaches from other disciplines can advance the science of CQI research;

*develop and test new theoretical models, conceptual frameworks and logic models to explain CQI initiatives;

*demonstrate how rapid-cycle "run-chart" or "PDSA-cycle" data can be used to rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of CQI interventions implemented to address key quality challenges; and/or

*develop methods to systematically capture implementation context information.

Proposals that address other issues that will advance the science of CQI research as it applies to health and health care will also be accepted.
