FUNDING OPPORTUNITY– DOD Prostate Cancer Research ProgramThe Department of Defense (DOD) has released the FY08 Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Program Announcements. Each Program Announcement is available electronically for downloading from Grants.gov, CDMRP website, and CDMRP eReceipt Website. As of 2007, proposals requesting funding from the CDMRP have been submitted through the Federal Government's single entry portal, Grants.gov, in compliance with Public Law 106-107. Pre-applications are required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website, prior to proposal submission to Grants.gov. New for 2008– In order to clarify the CDMRP Program Announcements and proposal submission process, CDMRP has divided these documents into the following: Each Application Instruction document will apply only to the specific funding mechanism listed; however this document is intended to be utilized in conjunction with the Program Announcement. New for 2008–In order to clarify the CDMRP Program Announcements and proposal submission process, CDMRP has divided these documents into the following: MARK YOUR CALENDAR– AACR Annual Meeting 2008The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual meeting is scheduled for April 12-16 in San Diego, CA. More than 17,000 participants from 60 countries will gather to discuss an estimated 6,000 abstracts and to hear more than 500 invited presentations on new and significant discoveries in basic, clinical, and translational cancer research. Scientific award lectures, grant writing workshops, networking events, and educational sessions will round out the comprehensive program. Advance registration deadline is Friday, March 7. As always, we are happy to publicize any news you have, such as major presentations, publications, awards, etc. KUDOS...Congratulations to Dr. Charis Eng, who will be the first person to hold a newly created endowed chair in cancer genomics research at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Eng, Professor of Genetics, is also Chairman of the Genomic Medicine Institute at the Lerner Research Institute. OBESITY AND INCREASED CANCER RISKA new British study published in this week's The Lancet examines the link between obesity and an elevated risk of cancer, highlighting the the difference in risk between genders and ethnicities. In a February 15, 2008 US News & World Report article about the above The Lancet study, Dr. Greg Cooper, Professor of Medicine- Gastroenterology at CWRU and UH, discussed the need for people to maintain a healthy weight, but also the importance of physicians conducting earlier screening on obese patients for certain cancers. Guest lecturer, Irving Weissman, MD, PhD, will present Stem Cells: Regenerative Medicine, Cancer, and Politics on March 17 at 5:00 pm in the David C. Hohn Lecture Hall Research Studies Center at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Weissman is a Professor of Pathology and Developmental Biology, Director of the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, and Director of the Cancer Center at Stanford University. Dr. Weissman first isolated and identified stem cells and characterized their stages of development. In 2005, he was awarded the Linus Pauling Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Science. The Hohn Lecture Series, featuring distinguished speakers in the field of health policy, was established in honor of David C. Hohn, MD, President Emeritus and Executive Director of Health Policy at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, with a grant from the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. MARK YOUR CALENDARS– International Symposium on Targeted Anticancer TherapiesRegistration is now open for the International Symposium on Targeted Anticancer Therapies (TAT) in Bethesda, Maryland, March 20-22. For details and registration information, click here. The scientific program of TAT 2008 will cover many types of targets and new drugs in early-phase clinical development, and will focus on clinical and translational research. The 2008 program will also cover clinical trials of combinations of targeted agents which are being conducted in increasing numbers. TAT 2008 will thus provide a glimpse of the future of cancer therapy. TAT 2008 is organized by the NDDO Research Foundation in partnership with NCI and the European Society for Medical Oncology. MARK YOUR CALENDARS– AACR/ASCO WorkshopAACR/ASCO are currently accepting applications for their workshop Methods in Clinical Cancer Research, August 2-8 at Vail Marriott Mountain Resort in Vail, Colorado. This event is described as "an intense workshop in the essentials of effective clinical trial designs of therapeutic interventions in the treatment of cancer for clinical fellow and junior faculty clinical researchers in all oncology subspecialties, including radiation and surgical oncology and radiology". MARK YOUR CALENDARS – ISCT Regional MeetingThe International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) will be holding a regional meeting on April 4-5 at the Ohio State University Biomedical Research Tower in Columbus, Ohio.
