Antidepressant May Treat Deadly Form of Lung Cancer, Study Finds
Everyday Health - Sept 27, 2013
A little-used class of antidepressants may be the newest weapon against a particular type of lung cancer, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Discovery. Researchers from the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University found that the antidepressant imipramine was effective at treating small-cell lung cancer — a rare and difficult to beat form of lung cancer...Nathan Pennell, MD, PhD, an oncologist with the Cleveland Clinic and Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, said the findings are exciting, even with the small number of people affected by the disease...

Genetic Mutation Identified in Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer
Helio/HemOnc Today - Sept 26, 2013
"For patients with advanced prostate cancer, treatment can include testosterone deprivation therapy, which works most of the time, but then the tumors invariably become resistant," Case Comprehensive Cancer Center member, Nima Sharifi, MD, Kendrick family chair for prostate cancer research at Cleveland Clinic, told HemOnc Today.

Hyundai Hope on Wheels Donates $500,000 to Clinic and UH Children's Cancer Research
The Plain Dealer - Sept 24, 2013
Hyundai Hope on Wheels, a national effort by Hyundai Motors America to raise money for childhood cancer research, is donating a total of $500,000 to Cleveland children's hospitals this year. The Cleveland Clinic's Children's Hospital and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital are two of 41 grant recipients nationwide receiving a total of $10.25 million in funding...The grant to UH Rainbow will fund the work of Dr. Alex Huang, program director of pediatric hematology and oncology, whose research focuses on finding new treatments and therapies for T-cell leukemia. Since 2002, the hospital has received more than $1 million in funding from Hope on Wheels.

The Clinic Children's Hospital grant will fund the research of Dr. Gregory Plautz, department chair of pediatric hematology and oncology, who is working on ways to help the body's own immune system fight cancer. This is the Clinic's second award from Hope On Wheels. Plautz received a $100,000 grant from the program in 2010. Both Plautz and Huang are members of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center in Cleveland.
