RFI: Opportunities for Cancer-relevant Innovative Technologies with Transformative Potential
The NCI is requesting more information on the need to support new cancer oriented technologies. Collectively, our responses will help prioritize grant RFAs and even supplemental grants to NCI-designated Cancer Centers. Please copy me on your response because it will help me advocate for your good ideas. The deadline for our input is July 15.

CASE CCC IN THE NEWS
Case Comprehensive Cancer Center Earns "Outstanding" Rating; Wins Five-Year Federal Grant Renewal
Hosted at Case Western Reserve, the center is a collaboration among the university, Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Case Medical Center. The center counts nearly 350 scientists and physicians among its members, and is one of just 41 nationwide to hold the NCI's designation as a comprehensive cancer center. Such elite organizations must demonstrate not only the highest quality of basic and clinical research, but also engage across disciplines and actively educate the public regarding prevention and treatment breakthroughs. The renewal comes with a recommendation the center receive more than $23 million during the course of the grant period.

CASE CCC ANNUAL RETREAT
Registration is open for the 2013 Case CCC Annual Scientific Retreat, July 11-12. The evening of July 11 will be held at the Wolstein Research Building and will feature a keynote address by Kenna Shaw from The Cancer Genome Atlas, followed by a cocktail reception and core facility posters. The retreat will continue on Friday, July 12 at Corporate College East. The day will be filled with interesting scientific sessions and lunchtime discussion tables. The day will wind down with a student poster session and cocktail reception. All attendees must pre-register by Monday, July 8.
Call for Abstracts
All graduate students, postdocs and fellows conducting cancer research are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentations at the Retreat, the evening of July 12. Judges will review abstracts based on the relationship to cancer, novelty, significance of findings, and clarity. Monetary prizes will be awarded. More information is available on the Cancer Center website. The deadline to submit abstracts to firstname.lastname@example.org is today, July 1 at 5 pm.
Dr. Leahy Receives Grant to Bring New Laser Capture Micro-dissection Machine to CWRU
This past week, Dr. Patrick Leahy received a Notice of Award from the NIH for a Shared Instrument Grant he submitted in March, 2012. Dr Leahy expects the requested instrument, a Leica LMD7000, to be installed within the next 30 days and his training on the instrument to be completed shortly thereafter. Dr. Ma Receives LRI Chairman's Innovative Research Fund Award 2013
Congratulations to Dr. Patrick Ma, who was recently awarded the LRI Chairman's Innovative Research Fund Award 2013 for his project, Integrative Exomic-Epigenomic Sequencing Analysis of Circulating Tumor Cells in Lung Cancer Targeted Therapy.
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation 'A' Award
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is accepting applications for the 'A' Award, a three-year grant designed for the early career scientist who wants to establish their career in pediatric oncology research. The ideal applicant has an original project that is not currently being funded. Demonstration of outstanding mentorship and a future commitment to pediatric cancer investigation are critical components of a successful application. Institutional commitment to the applicant is also expected.

Mark your calendars for MSC 2013: Adult Stem Cell Therapy & Regenerative Medicine, August 19-21, 2013 at Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center. Presented by the National Center for Regenerative Medicine, this conference will offer a forum for the exchange and discussion of research, ideas, and cutting-edge breakthroughs in translational regenerative medicine. Online registration is open and poster abstracts are being accepted for presentation both in poster format and potentially accepted for platform presentation during the main program as well. Deadline is July 19 for poster abstract submission.
