ASH Announces New Bridge Award Program for Members
I serve on the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Investment committee. At our recent meeting we set aside funds from operations and the ASH endowment to support this important initiative. I will also be suggesting to AACR that they consider a similar program. Please consider an application.
ASH Bridge Grant Program
The increasing NIH budget crisis will have devastating effects that will be felt by ASH members for the next decade or more. If anticipated cuts to the NIH budget become a reality in January 2013, NIH would be unable to fund 2,300 research project grants (nearly one-quarter of the new and competing grants). Now more than ever it is imperative for the Society and the hematology community to fight for hematology funding and the future of the specialty.
As a demonstration of its commitment to protecting the field and those who have dedicated their careers to the specialty, ASH has pledged $9 million to a new, three-year Bridge Grant Program to help preserve the careers of its talented member scientists whose vital research will not be accomplished due to across-the-board cuts to the NIH budget. Read more about the introduction of the ASH Bridge Grant Program in this ASH press release.
About the Award
In 2013 and for the next two years, ASH's new bridge grant program will provide up to 30 one-year awards annually, in the amount of $100,000 each to ASH members who applied for an NIH R01 grant but were denied funding due to budget cutbacks. The long-term goal of the award is to help sustain recipients' research and contribute to their retention in hematology investigation.
Additional Details
• From 2013-2015, ASH will award 90 ASH members (30 per year) with $100,000 bridge grants, for a $9 million total investment.
• ASH membership is required at the time of application to the Bridge Grant Program and throughout the award period.
• There will be two award cycles per year. The Society is currently seeking support from individual and corporate donors in order to provide additional awards.

Dr. Mikkael Sekeres Appointed FDA Committee Chair
Dr. Mikkael Sekeres is the new Chair of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Committee reviews and evaluates data concerning the safety and effectiveness of marketed and investigational human drug products for use in the treatment of cancer and makes appropriate recommendations to the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. Registration of Clinical Trials in Clinicaltrials.Gov
As required by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), any intervention type of clinical trial (drugs, biologics, devices, surgical, behavioral or other) must be registered in clinicaltrials.gov PRIOR to registration of the first patient. Editors of the ICMJE will not consider publication of manuscripts if trials are not registered completely and prospectively.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
DOD Broad Agency Announcement for Extramural Biomedical Research and Development
The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) seeks novel biomedical solutions to preserve the high level of performance and save the lives of Special Operations Forces (SOF) in field environments. Any projects proposed must be unique to the requirements of SOF who typically conduct combat operations in austere, remote locations without timely access to medical evacuation or elevated levels of medical care. It is these far-forward and/or isolated operations that make SOF medicine unique and result in material solutions characterized by ruggedness, light weight, small volume, and low power requirements. USSOCOM is also interested in research that will lead to improved techniques and procedures that do not necessarily require new material.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Career Development Program
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Career Development Program (CDP) offers career development awards to researchers in various stages of their research careers.
- Scholar: Open to highly qualified investigators who have shown a capacity for independent, sustained original investigation in the field of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Applicants must hold an independent faculty-level or equivalent position and have obtained substantial support for research from a national agency.
- Scholar in Clinical Research: Open to highly qualified investigators who hold an independent faculty-level appointment and are conducting original, independent applied research, often involving early-stage clinical trials that will advance the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of hematologic malignancies. Applicants are expected to have concomitant support for research from another source or agency.
- Special Fellow: Open to qualified investigators who have completed a minimum of two years of postdoctoral research training and are continuing research under the research sponsor's direction. This award is meant to permit investigators to begin to transition to an independent research program.
- Special Fellow in Clinical Research (SFCR): Open to researchers who hold a PhD, MD or equivalent degree and have completed at least two years of clinical hematology, oncology, hematology/oncology or hematopathology training or postdoctoral research training in a clinical discipline (such as cytogenetics or molecular pathology). Applicants must show evidence that their career focus will be on preventing, diagnosing or treating leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
- Fellow: Open to promising investigators with less than two years of postdoctoral research training. This award encourages investigators to embark on an academic career involving clinical or fundamental research in, or related to, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma under a research sponsor's direction.
- Quality of Life Research Funding Initiative: The Quality of Life Research Initiative is a subcategory of the Career Development and Translational Research grant programs. Investigators must apply to the initiative through one of these two programs.
