Approval of Axitinib Adds Another Therapy Option for Metastatic RCC MR/PET: The Ultimate Imaging Hybrid MARK YOUR CALENDARSPacific Symposium on Biocomputing 2013: Call for Papers and AbstractsThe eighteenth Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) will be held January 3-7, 2013 at the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island of Hawaii. PSB will bring together top researchers from North America, the Asian Pacific nations, Europe and around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in all aspects of computational biology. The session Post-NGS: Interpretation and Analysis of Next Generation Sequencing Data for Basic and Translational Science, will be co-chaired by Drs. Gurkan Bebek, CWRU; Mehmet Koyuturk, CWRU; Ben Raphael, Brown University; Thomas LaFramboise, CWRU; and Mark Chance, CWRU. In recent years, research has focused on next generation sequencing (NGS) to characterize genomic content. Now that the scientific community is equipped with efficient and reliable methods, it is natural to expect that the vast amount of information generated by NGS methods will be further analyzed to seek answers to fundamental biological and medical questions. This session recognizes this challenge and will provide a forum for methods and algorithms developed for analysis of finalized next-generation sequencing data. Motivated by the flourishing availability of genome sequences and related data, novel computational methods that interpret these data for research and clinical applications are invited to this session. Deadline for papers and abstracts: July 31 FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESGI SPORE Scholars Training ProgramThe Case GI SPORE will fund two new Research Scholars in the upcoming academic year, 2012-2013. Support at the level of $50,000/year for 2 years will be provided by funds from the NCI and the CWRU SOM through the Case GI SPORE. This program is designed to support research training leading to independent careers in translational GI Cancer research. Awardees are expected to devote 70% effort to research and training, will conduct a mentored research program in the laboratory or program of one of the SPORE Investigators and have an assigned mentoring team. Applicants must be US citizens. They must have a faculty appointment at the time the scholarship begins or be in the senior year of a training program with a department commitment to a faculty appointment during the first scholarship year. Opportunity is available to faculty members at CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center, UHCMC or Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Deadline: June 29 American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant AwardsThe Case CCC, with funds from its American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (IRG), will provide seed money to foster cancer research by junior faculty who have no current national grant support of their own. Investigators in the Case School of Medicine and Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine as well as in other schools and colleges in the University are eligible. Grants, not to exceed $30,000 direct costs, will be awarded to investigators who intend to gather preliminary data to be used in seeking future and independently funded programs. Letter of Intent Deadline: July 9 University Hospitals Harrington Discovery Institute Scholar-Innovator Grants programThrough its newly launched Scholar-Innovator Grants program, University Hospitals Harrington Discovery Institute (UH HDI) will provide financial support and professional mentoring to physician-scientists with breakthrough, patient-inspired clinical research projects. These Harrington Scholar-Innovators will be provided with focused direction on the steps necessary to move a discovery forward through early stage research to possible clinical development, which is training that is not currently provided to physician-scientists.
