Friday, May 18 Please join us May 18 for the next Cancer Center Seminar Series where Dr. Mary Reid, Associate Professor of Oncology and Director of Collaborative Research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, will present Lung Cancer Screening and Chemoprevention. Dr. Reid joined the staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 2002 as a Research Scientist in the Department of Epidemiology. She came to RPCI from the Arizona Cancer Center where she served as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, College of Public Health and Co-Director of the Cancer Prevention and Control Training Program. She completed her doctoral training in Epidemiology and Cancer in 1998 at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She has authored or co-authored more than 70 publications, serves as a regular reviewer for several cancer, nutrition and epidemiology journals, and as a regular adhoc reviewer for several NCI grant mechanisms. For this presentation, Dr. Reid will be reviewing the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, reviewing ongoing Chemoprevention Trials at RPCI, as well as providing an update of the new Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESMesothelioma Research GrantsThe Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation announces the availability of its 2012 round of mesothelioma research grant funding. Continuing its efforts to stimulate translational research for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, the Meso Foundation is again soliciting applications for funding of innovative projects that address issues for the treatment of the disease. Eligible projects may relate to benchwork, translational or clinical research and may be conducted through any not-for-profit academic, medical or research institution, in the U.S. or abroad. Deadline: July 6 International Myeloma Foundation Brian D. Novis Research AwardThe International Myeloma Foundation funds several research grants including the Brian D. Novis Research Award. These awards go to doctors/researchers doing work in the field of multiple myeloma and related disorders including smoldering myeloma, MGUS (monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance) as well as immunoglobulin derived amyloidosis.

Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer ResearchThe National Foundation for Cancer Research has released a call for nomination for the Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research. This Prize was established to honor an outstanding researcher whose scientific achievements have expanded our understanding of cancer and cancer causation; whose vision has moved cancer research in new directions; and whose discoveries have resulted in notable advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis, or treatment. The Prize also promotes public awareness of the importance of basic cancer research and encourages the sustained investment needed to accelerate the translation of these research discoveries into new cancer treatments. Rom Leidner, MD received a Career Development Award from American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Conquer Cancer Foundation for his proposal, Molecular Cytology in Barrett's Esophagus. In this project Dr. Leidner is studying a novel, non-invasive method for detecting molecular changes associated with Barrett's esophagus and progression to cancer. Congratulations to Dr. Leidner and his mentor team, Drs. Sanford Markowitz, Amitabh Chak, Nathan Berger and Neal Meropol.
