Minority Recruitment and Cancer Research Retreat
The Minority Recruitment and Cancer Research Retreat is tomorrow, August 30, from 3-6 pm in the Wolstein Research Building Auditorium. If you have not already done so, I ask that you register to attend this important meeting, where we will gather as group to tackle to issue of how to better reach the local underserved community with regard to cancer clinical trials.
The keynote address, Minority Populations and Clinical Trials: Myths, Realities, and Challenges, will be delivered by cancer disparities expert Dr. Terrance Albrecht of Wayne State University and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. In addition, I will give a talk on the Importance of Minority Accrual and Known Barriers, Dr. Neal Meropol will present Race, Socioeconomics and Clinical Trial Participation–a pilot study, and Seidman Cancer Center Community Outreach Manager Hermione Malone will present the draft action plan created by the Case CCC Minority Accrual Taskforce. There will be an opportunity for detailed dialogue on several key aspects of the plan via breakout sessions.
All physicians, investigators, diversity investigators, research nurses, clinical trials staff, community outreach staff, and cancer center administrative staff will benefit from attending this critical dialogue aimed at identifying tactics to improve our recruitment of minorities to cancer clinical trials. NCI Office of Cancer Centers New Webinar Series
The NCI Office of Cancer Centers is initiating a free webinar series to foster awareness of NCI opportunities, inform participants about existing NCI programs, and increase communication between cancer center investigators and staff of NCI programs. I encourage you to participate in this Learning Series, which will feature guest speakers from NCI programs and their awardees to present on initiatives that will be of interest to you.
The first webinar, Bringing Science to the Marketplace: The NCI SBIR Program, will be September 8 from 2-3:30 pm. Instructions on how to participate in this webinar and future sessions is available on the Learning Series Webinar homepage.
Future topics include NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis:
Quantitative Imaging Network (QIN) on October 4, and The Cancer Genome Atlas on November 1. The NCI Office of Cancer Centers is soliciting topics for the future Learning Series Webinars. Clinical Research Scholar Career Development Training Opportunity
The CTSC KL2 seeks outstanding candidates to fill Clinical Research (CR) Scholar positions available in July 2012. The training program is funded by the NIH and it is a component of the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative. This innovative program is a collaboration involving CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, UH and MetroHealth. Each CR Scholar will embark on a 4-year program of intensive training in interdisciplinary team-based, patient-oriented research, combining a novel educational program with mentored research experiences.
