CASE CCC IN THE NEWSNew Prostate Cancer Screening Test Shows Promise for Diagnosis Distance Caregivers for Advanced Cancer Patients Have Special Needs This Week on Kaleidoscope-August 7, 2011 ANNOUNCEMENTSClinical Research Scholar Career Development Training OpportunityThe CTSC KL2 seeks outstanding candidates to fill Clinical Research (CR) Scholar positions available in July 2012. The training program is funded by the NIH and it is a component of the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative. This innovative program is a collaboration involving CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, UH and MetroHealth. Each CR Scholar will embark on a 4-year program of intensive training in interdisciplinary team-based, patient-oriented research, combining a novel educational program with mentored research experiences. MARK YOUR CALENDARSMinority Recruitment and Cancer Research RetreatLike many cancer centers, we face the challenge of how best to ensure access and support to our local underserved community with regard to cancer clinical trials. In an effort to proactively address this issue, the Case CCC will be holding a Minority Recruitment and Cancer Research Retreat on August 30 from 3-6 pm at the Wolstein Research Building Auditorium. The featured speaker will be Terrance Albrecht, PhD, Associate Center Director and Population Sciences Leader of the Population Studies and Disparities Research Program at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute/ Wayne State University. Participants can expect an overview of the barriers we face in accrual, as well as some promising research in the area of minority recruitment. Additionally, the draft action plan created by the Case CCC Minority Accrual Taskforce will be unveiled with opportunity for detailed dialogue on several key aspects of the plan via breakout sessions. All physicians, investigators, diversity investigators, research nurses, clinical trials staff, community outreach staff, and cancer center administrative staff are asked to attend this critical dialogue aimed at identifying tactics to improve our recruitment of minorities to cancer clinical trials. Registration is required due to a limited space. Inaugural Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer SymposiumIn celebration of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, please plan to attend the Inaugural Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Symposium, September 1 from 8:45 am- 1 pm in the Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital Amphitheater. This special program will provide an update on the progress and outcomes being made in Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult (PAYA) Cancer at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. Zelig Tochner, MD, Director, Proton Therapy Project at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will deliver the keynote address, "Proton Therapy for Childhood Cancer". This event is free and open to physicians, UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital employees and the public. Imaging Solutions In Cancer Management: A Case-Based ConferenceRegistration is now open for Imaging Solutions In Cancer Management: A Case-Based Conference. Join us September 8 for this comprehensive oncologic imaging course, which focuses on cancer management using imaging as a diagnostic tool and as a guide for minimally invasive therapeutic applications. This course takes a practical approach using cases and features multiple specialists ranging from medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and basic scientists.
