FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES DOD Lung Cancer Research Program Applications for the FY11 Lung Cancer Research Program (LCRP) are being solicited by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Defense Health Program. The vision of the FY11 LCRP is to eradicate deaths from lung cancer to better the health and welfare of the military and the American public. As such, the LCRP will support and integrate research from multiple disciplines for early detection, diagnosis, prevention, cure, and control of lung cancer. DOD LCRP Early Investigator Synergistic Idea Award Supports collaborations between two independent investigators early in their careers who address an innovative and high impact lung cancer research question from synergistic and complementary perspectives. This award is designed to promote collaborations between a clinician and laboratory scientist. Pre-Application (Preproposal) Deadline: August 3 Application Deadline: November 9 DOD LCRP Investigator Initiated Translational Research Award Supports translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Must include preliminary data that is relevant to lung cancer and the proposed project. This award does not support clinical trials, but may support correlative studies that are associated with an existing clinical trial and projects that develop endpoints for clinical trials. Pre-Application (Preproposal) Deadline: August 3 Application Deadline: November 9 DOD LCRP Promising Clinician Research Award Supports a research project performed by promising physician-researchers. This award is intended to prepare physicians with clinical duties and/or responsibilities for an independent and active career in lung cancer research. Previous experience in lung cancer research is allowed, but not required. Pre-Application (Preproposal) Deadline: August 3 Application Deadline: November 9 Pilot Project Grants: American Cancer Society IRG Awards The Case CCC is currently accepting applications for American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (IRG) awards. Pilot funding is available for projects in basic, clinical, prevention and control, behavioral, health services, and epidemiology cancer research with awards up to $30,000 for one-year cancer research projects that provide the basis for future independent grants. LOI Deadline: June 13 Application Deadline: July 5, 2011 Case CCC Clinical Trials Funding Opportunity The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is announcing the availability of Protocol Specific Research Support (PSRS) funding for Year 2011. The budgeted funds are for the conduct of early phase clinical trial and restricted to support research nurses and data managers directly involved in the conduct of these clinical trials. Studies developed jointly between UH and CCF with planned accrual at both institutions will be prioritized. ANNOUNCEMENTS An article co-authored by Aruna Basu, Hansjuerg Alder, Amer Khiyami, Patrick Leahy, Carlo M. Croce and Subrata Haldar was highlighted on the cover of the February 11, 2011 issue of Genes and Cancer. Their article, "MicroRNA-375 and MicroRNA-221 Potential Noncoding RNAs Associated with Antiproliferative Activity of Benzyl Isothiocyanate in Pancreatic Cancer", suggests that anticancer agent BITC might target the expression of miR-221 and miR-375 to switch hyperproliferative pancreatic cancer cells to a hypoproliferative state.
