The evening of July 8 will feature a poster presentation session. All graduate students, postdocs and fellows conducting cancer research are invited to submit abstracts. The Retreat Program Committee will review abstracts based on the relationship to cancer, novelty, significance of findings, and clarity. Monetary prizes will be awarded. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESAACR-Prevent Cancer Foundation Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention ResearchThe AACR-Prevent Cancer Foundation Award for Excellence in Cancer Prevention Research is given to a scientist residing in any country in the world for his or her seminal contributions to the field of cancer prevention. Such investigations must have been conducted in basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological, or behavioral science in cancer prevention research. Further, these studies must have had not only a major impact on the field, but must also have stimulated new directions in this important area. Deadline: June 13 Pilot Project Grants: American Cancer Society IRG AwardsThe Case CCC is currently accepting applications for American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (IRG) awards. Pilot funding is available for projects in basic, clinical, prevention and control, behavioral, health services, and epidemiology cancer research with awards up to $30,000 for one-year cancer research projects that provide the basis for future independent grants. LOI Deadline: June 13 Case CCC Clinical Trials Funding OpportunityThe Case Comprehensive Cancer Center is announcing the availability of Protocol Specific Research Support (PSRS) funding for Year 2011. The budgeted funds are for the conduct of early phase clinical trial and restricted to support research nurses and data managers directly involved in the conduct of these clinical trials. Studies developed jointly between UH and CCF with planned accrual at both institutions will be prioritized. ANNOUNCEMENTSLee Ponsky Receives 2011 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine AwardLee Ponsky, MD, Associate Professor of Urology, and Satoko Kanahara, fourth year medical student at CCLCM, have received the 2011 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award presented by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The award is given annually to one faculty member and one graduating medical student for exemplifying outstanding humanism in medicine and scientific excellence. Egorin Workshop in Cancer PharmacologyThe Cancer Education Consortium is pleased to announce its annual workshop to be held September 23-26 in Leesburg, Virginia. This 3-day interactive workshop offers a broad-based curriculum that covers a range of topics related to new drug development and clinical evaluation. Expert speakers will lead discussions and present important didactic information regarding the preclinical and clinical evaluation of cytotoxic and targeted drugs, the identification and use of biomarkers, the special challenges of evaluating combination therapies, the problem of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic drug interactions, and effects of organ dysfunction on drug disposition and toxicity. The discussion will include a focus on validation of targets and confirmation of mechanism of action and resistance in clinical trials. The 20-25 scholars selected will have ample opportunity for one-on-one interface with the nationally renowned faculty as well as peer-to-peer networking. Specialized evening workshops will also include sessions on new drugs, utility of biomarkers for selection of subjects and for prediction of response, and late breaking developments in cancer therapeutics.
