Friday, May 13 Please join us Friday, May 13 at the next Cancer Center Seminar Series featuring Sergio A. Giralt, MD. Dr. Giralt, Chief of Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will present Reduced Intensity Conditioning. What Have We Learned Over the Last 15 Years?. Sergio A. Giralt, MD received his medical degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela, and completed his postgraduate internship at the University Hospital of Caracas. He also completed an internal medicine residency at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio and a postdoctoral fellowship in hematology and oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, Dr. Giralt holds membership in several professional societies, including the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the North American Society of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation, and the International Society of Haematology. He holds key positions with several organizations, including the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry Executive Committee, the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMTCTN) Steering Committee, the National Marrow Donor Program Board of Directors, and the Clinical Advisory Board of the Web site Managing Myeloma. He is the Chair of the BMTCTN and Past Chair of Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. May is National Cancer Research Month The Case CCC joins the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and over 70 cancer centers nationwide in celebrating May as National Cancer Research Month. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESSTERIS Corporation Infectious Diseases Research Support GrantThe Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at CWRU and UHCMC, with funds from STERIS Corporation, will provide seed money to faculty to foster research in emerging and healthcare-associated infections. Investigators in the basic science and clinical departments in the School of Medicine and Hospital System as well as in other departments throughout the University are eligible. Grants, not to exceed $37,500 direct costs each, will be awarded to investigators who intend to gather preliminary data to be used in seeking future independently funded awards. Basic science applications are encouraged but should have a clear translational component related to the themes of this request for application. Up to four grants annually will be awarded. McDonnell Foundation 21st Century Science Initiative 2011The James S. McDonnell Foundation (JSMF) is initiating a new postdoctoral fellowship opportunity in the area of Complex Systems research. Pilot funding is available for projects in basic, clinical, prevention and control, behavioral, health services, and epidemiology cancer research with awards up to $30,000 for one-year cancer research projects that provide the basis for future independent grants.
