MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2007, Featuring Tumors of the Brain and Other Nervous System
According to the recently released Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, there has been a decrease in the rate of deaths from all cancers. Lung cancer continues to take more lives than any other cancer, despite a continued decrease in lung cancer deaths in men and a first-time decrease in in women. New cancer diagnoses for adults have also dropped slightly, though childhood cancer incidence rates have increased.
The Report also includes a special section on brain tumors and other nervous system cancers. Of special note, researchers found non-malignant tumors were about twice as common as malignant tumors in adults. Brain tumors were much more common among adults than children, but if a child was diagnosed with a brain tumor it was more likely to be malignant.

Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures [SPECS II]
The cancer center leadership encourages consideration of this grant opportunity especially in the context of our disease based research initiative and strategic plan. Please direct comments to Dr. Stan Gerson and he will facilitate dialogue with other cancer center member investigators.
This message is to alert you to a new funding opportunity announcement: Strategic Partnering to Evaluate Cancer Signatures [SPECS II] (PAR-11-151). There will be one receipt date in 2011 for this competition. Please note this is a re-issue of PAR-10-126. New in 2011: electronic application submission and a cap on requested budgets.
This FOA encourages the submission of grant applications for support of the clinical application of multi-analyte molecular signatures derived from comprehensive molecular annotation of tumors. The NCI invites investigators to form strategic partnerships that will bring together the multi-disciplinary expertise and resources needed to determine how the information derived from comprehensive molecular analyses can be used to improve patient care and, ultimately, patient outcomes.
