MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORAnnual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1975-2007, Featuring Tumors of the Brain and Other Nervous SystemAccording to the recently released Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, there has been a decrease in the rate of deaths from all cancers. Lung cancer continues to take more lives than any other cancer, despite a continued decrease in lung cancer deaths in men and a first-time decrease in in women. New cancer diagnoses for adults have also dropped slightly, though childhood cancer incidence rates have increased. The Report also includes a special section on brain tumors and other nervous system cancers. Of special note, researchers found non-malignant tumors were about twice as common as malignant tumors in adults. Brain tumors were much more common among adults than children, but if a child was diagnosed with a brain tumor it was more likely to be malignant. The Report appeared online March 31 in the "Journal of the National Cancer Institute", and will be available in print on May 4. A summary of report highlights is available on the NCI website.
