Dr. Noy, Professor of Pharmacology, will present Retinoids and Cancer. Dr. Noy has had a long-standing interest in understanding the physiological functions and mechanisms of action and of nuclear hormone receptors, especially as related to receptors that respond to retinoids (vitamin A and its metabolites). Her laboratory discovered that the transcriptional activities of retinoic acid (RA) are mediated by two different nuclear receptors, RAR and PPARβ/δ. Furthermore, the group found that RA signaling partitions between these pathways through the actions of two binding proteins: CRABP-II, which delivers RA to RARs, and FABP5, which shuttles the hormone to the alternate receptor PPARβ/δ. The laboratory showed that dysregulation of the balance between these two pathways underlies the RA-resistance of some cancers. On-going work aims to develop novel anticarcinogenic agents that will inhibit mammary carcinoma growth by restoring proper RA signaling. Recently, the Noy laboratory established that the parental vitamin A molecule, retinol, which has long been believed to function solely through active metabolites, is in fact a signaling molecule in its own right, which can regulate gene transcription through the JAK/STAT cascade. These observations indicate the scope of the biological activities of vitamin A is broader than previously suspected. CWRU Research Best Practices Day Registration is open for the CWRU Research Best Practices Day, Friday, March 18 from 8 am - 2 pm in Wolstein Auditorium (WRB 1-413). Planned sessions include Responsible Conduct of Research, Conflicts of Interests in Research, Technology Transfer, Human Subjects Protections, and Research Financials. Investigators, study coordinators, department assistants, graduate students and others involved in research at CWRU and the affiliated hospitals are encouraged to attend. Case CCC Annual Scientific Retreat The Case CCC Annual Scientific Retreat will be July 8-9 at Corporate College East. Details will be posted soon. FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES American Cancer Society Research Scholar Grants With a primary focus on beginning investigators, the ACS Extramural Grants Program seeks to support and promote high impact and innovative cancer research across a wide range of disciplines to meet critically important needs in the control of cancer. Each year, the Society receives approximately 2,000 requests for research funding and health care professional training support. All proposals are subjected to multiple levels of peer review to identify the most meritorious and innovative projects for funding. The Society offers extramural support for research and training via five programs: Health Professional Training in Grant Control, Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry of Cancer, Cancer Cell Biology and Metastasis, Preclinical and Translational Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research and Immunology, and Cancer Control and Prevention Research. Applications are being accepted for ACS Research Scholar Grants, which provide the resources for investigator-initiated research in a variety of cancer-relevant areas. Applicants must be independent, self-directed researchers within six years of their first academic appointment. Applicants to the ACS Cancer Control and Prevention Research Program ONLY may be at any career stage provided the focus of their project is either: 1) health policy/health services research or 2) cancer disparity reduction.
