CASE CCC IN THE NEWSUniversity Hospitals Receives $35 Million Gift for Cancer Research and Treatment Case Western Reserve Geneticist Receives Prestigious NIH Director's Pioneer Award NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESSusan G. Komen for the Cure Postdoctoral Fellowships and TrainingSusan G. Komen for the Cure Postdoctoral Fellowships grants seek to attract scientists into careers addressing important research questions about breast cancer, expand the skills and expertise of breast cancer researchers in training, and position trainees for independent careers conducting breast cancer research that will directly affect breast cancer patients. Fellowships are awarded to the mentor/PI. By the start date of the grant, fellows must be no more than 3 years post-completion of his/her most recent clinical MD fellowship or 5 years post-completion of his/her most recent MD residency or PhD. Susan G. Komen for the Cure Post Baccalaureate Training in Disparities Research grants seek to support training for students very early in their careers to allow them to begin to define meaningful career paths focused on disparities in breast cancer outcomes across population groups. Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy 2010 Young Investigator AwardThe Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy, Inc. (ACGT) is accepting applications for the 2010 Young Investigator Award. Candidates must hold an MD, MPH, PhD, or equivalent degree, and be a tenure track Assistant Professor within five years of their initial appointment to this rank at the time of award activation. The investigator must be conducting original research as an independent faculty member reporting directly to the Department Chair or Division Chief, with dedicated laboratory space allocated by the Department Chair. ACGT has no citizenship restrictions, and research supported by the award must be conducted at medical schools and research centers located in the United States or Canada. MARK YOUR CALENDARSCase CCC Scientific Series: Basic Science of Cancer Focus Group Pilot ProjectsCome and hear updates on the Basic Science of Cancer Focus Group pilot projects at the next Case CCC Scientific Series, August 30 from 4-7 pm in Wolstein Auditorium (WRB 1413). Cathleen Carlin, PhD and Zhenghe Wang, PhD Shigemi Matsuyama, PhD and Alex Almasan, PhD Saba Valadkhan, PhD 2010 Cleveland Nanomedicine SummitRegistration is open for the 2010 Cleveland NanoMedicine Summit, October 18-19 at the InterContinental Hotel. Co-hosted by the Cleveland Clinic and CWRU, this event will continue its incredibly successful format that brings together scientists, clinicians, business professionals, investors, and others to investigate sustainable solutions of multidisciplinary methodologies to further advance the use of nanomedicine in clinical practice. Clinical and research abstracts on the topic of nanoparticles for diagnostics, imaging, and therapeutics will be accepted through October 1. Cancer Center members Drs. Vinod Labhasetwar, James Basilion and Maciej Zborowski are on the Organizing Committee. Graft versus Host Disease ConferenceTogether with the Case CCC, the Meredith A. Cowden Foundation presents the 2010 National GVHD Symposium to be held at Corporate College East on Thursday, November 4. This unique one-day program will be a two-track conference (one for physicians and one for patients) focusing on cutting edge research and new treatments. Continuing medical education credits will be offered for attending and participating medical providers. Featured Case CCC presenters include: Drs. Stan Gerson, Ken Cooke, Matt Kalaycio and Jeff Auletta. CASE CCC SEED FUNDINGRequest for Proposals: Basic, Clinical, or Translational Human Tissue Based Cancer Research ProjectsThe Case CCC will provide seed money to foster collaborations and to promote and increase institution-wide capacity and competitiveness in basic, clinical or translational human tissue based research. Three awards of $50,000 and three awards at $20,000 apiece will be awarded to investigators who intend to gather preliminary data to be used in seeking future independently funded programs and support. Case CCC members with a faculty appointment at all levels (eligible to apply for independent nationally competitive research grants) are encouraged to apply. Proposals from both junior and senior investigators are encouraged. Postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and research associates are not eligible to apply for these pilot grants. It is expected that these grants will represent collaborative efforts between lab based or quantitative science-based and clinical investigators, likely a clinician who is a member of the disease team of the tissue research in question.
