MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTORCase CCC Retreat: Thinking of Cancer as a Disease, Not a Cell LineThe focus of this year's retreat is on translational cancer research with a bias towards disease-based research efforts and cancer cohorts. We will feature a few new initiatives this year that are priorities for the Cancer Center. These reflect trends developing in funding efforts for the National Cancer Institute. First, the trends coming out of NCI include an interest in focusing our basic research efforts towards identifying targets that may be useful for new drug development, understanding individual cancer susceptibility to specific cancer treatments or using pathways, genomics and other phenotypic characterizations for cancer risk prediction, prognosis and response to experimental as well as conventional treatments. Presentations by new investigators recruited in the past year will start the program, followed by a luncheon breakout session for each Program to discuss "hot" science, and to consider the strategic direction of the Program. This will be followed by research presentations from the Cancer Signaling, Cancer Imaging, Cell Death Pathways, and Prevention and Control Programs. We will use this to prioritize resources, recruitment and program development to help us develop an overall strategic plan for the Cancer Center. We will continue to put resources into multi-investigator efforts in disease areas to encourage development of larger "team" science in cancer research. Reflecting this, we will have presentations on use of tissue-based research using biorepositories and the use of large cohorts for gene discovery. Derek Raghavan, MD, PhD, will lead a discussion on Saturday morning on the recent experience from study section, with 4 of our members who sit on grant review committees who will comment on the new 12-page grant and how they are reviewed under the new review format. This will be invaluable for all of us submitting grants in the next year. Our program includes 73 abstracts from trainees with viewing time throughout the retreat and after dinner poster discussions and evaluation with the 8-9 awards for outstanding posters. I would like to thank the hard work of the Cancer Center administrative staff and the exceptional effort of the Retreat Planning Committee: Drs. Jill Barnholtz-Sloan, Greg Cooper, David Danielpour, Chris Flask, Ram Ganapathi, Candece Gladson, Danny Manor, Nathan Pennell, John Pink, and Zhenghe Wang. See you at the retreat!
