Case Comprehensive Cancer Center Newsletter

May 24, 2010

The testimony given by NIH Director Francis Collins supporting the NIH budget request for 2011 is available to read. The good news is a $1 billion request for increase in NIH support with an emphasis on RPG rather than contracts, and an interest in novel cutting edge research, approaches to personalized medicine, and use of genomics in therapeutics. It is a good read and gives an indication of the priorities Dr. Collins has.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY– BCRF-AACR Grants for Translational Breast Cancer Research

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Grants for Translational Breast Cancer Research were established in 2007 to provide support for innovative cancer research projects designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and application of new agents to treat breast cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent.

Independent investigators who are affiliated with any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world may apply. There are no geographic, national, or residency status restrictions. Pre- and postdoctoral fellows, clinical research fellows or the equivalent, or other investigators who are working under the auspices of a scientific mentor are not eligible to apply. Applicants must have acquired a doctoral degree in a related field. Both AACR members and nonmembers are eligible to apply. However, nonmembers must submit a satisfactory application for AACR Active membership by June 9, 2010.

LOI Deadline: June 7
Application Deadline: August 23

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY– Frontier Community Health Integration Demonstration Program

The purpose of the Frontier Community Health Integration Demonstration is to develop and test new models for the delivery of health care services in frontier areas through improving access to and better integrating the delivery of health care to Medicare beneficiaries. The primary focus areas of the demonstration are the following:

  1. Explore ways to increase access to, and improve the adequacy of, payments for acute care, extended care, and other essential health care services provided under the Medicare and Medicaid programs in frontier areas;
  2. Evaluate regulatory challenges facing frontier providers and the communities they serve.

HRSA will be funding this cooperative agreement to provide technical assistance and broad analysis of regulatory issues and challenges facing low-volume, frontier providers in the context of implementing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) demonstration authorized in Section 123 of MIPPA. Participation in the HRSA-funded activities does not guarantee participation in the CMS demonstration.

Deadline: June 22
