CASE CCC IN THE NEWSWhat You Don't Know Might Kill You Case Western Reserve Receives $3.4 Million in Grants for Various Health Studies Blood Vessel Builders CWRU Receives $20.5M From Dental School Grad KUDOSMichael Vogelbaum, MD, PhD, Associate Director of Cleveland Clinic's Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center, has been named the Robert W. and Kathryn B. Lamborn Chair for Neuro-Oncology. The Chair will provide financial support for brain cancer research and education. Congratulations to the following Cancer Center members who were recently awarded small pilot funding to support studies conducted through the CTSC Core facilities: Mark Adams, PhD, Jill Barnholtz-Sloan, PhD, Ann-Marie Broome, PhD, Patrick Ma, MD, and James Swain, PhD. ACS RESEARCHER RECOGNITION LUNCHEONOn Thursday, October 15, the American Cancer Society held a luncheon to recognize local cancer researchers who had recently been awarded fellowships and grants. Dr. Clark Distelhorst was recognized as the recipient of the Hero of Hope Research Medal of Honor. Since 2001, this award has recognized an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of cancer research. This year, Dr. Distelhorst was chosen especially for his commitment to furthering cancer research, and his role as an educator and mentor to the next generation of cancer researchers. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS– AACR Future Leaders in Translational Research Special SymposiumThe AACR Associate Member Council seeks institutional nominations of outstanding young investigators as speakers for the Future Leaders in Translational Research Special Symposium, to be held during the AACR 101st Annual Meeting, April 17-21, 2010, in Washington, DC. Selected speakers will be invited to present a 25 minute platform presentation and will be introduced by a prominent senior researcher within their field. Selected candidates will be considered Invited Speakers at the Annual Meeting, receiving complimentary registration and reimbursement of eligible expenses related to meeting attendance. Institutional nominations will be accepted from any cancer center director, dean, or other leader of any institution involved in cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science; such institutions include those within academia, industry, and government, anywhere in the world. Each institution may submit up to two nominees, who may be graduate students, medical students or residents, clinical fellows, or postdoctoral fellows. Junior faculty are not eligible for nomination, including trainees expected to advance to junior faculty status prior to the Symposium. NIH EXTRAMURAL LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAMSThe application cycle for the NIH extramural Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) ends December 1. The extramural LRPs often allow scientific investigators to remain in the research workforce, achieve research independence, and focus their efforts on advancing the health of the nation without having to worry about their student loan debt. The extramural LRPs include Clinical Research, Pediatric Research, Health Disparities Research, Contraception and Infertility Research, and Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds. Applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree (with the exception of the Contraception and Infertility Research LRP); be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident; devote 20 hours or more per week to conducting qualified research funded by a university, nonprofit organization, or federal, state, or local government entity; and have qualified educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20 percent of their institutional base salary. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS– Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Clinical Scientist Development AwardThe Doris Duke Charitable Foundation is accepting nominations for the Clinical Scientist Development Award. This award provides grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to independent clinical research careers. Each U.S. accredited, degree-granting institution, "which would encompass for that institution all affiliated graduate schools, related hospitals and research institutes", may nominate up to two candidates. MARK YOUR CALENDARS– Breast Cancer Spotlight SeriesSave the date for the next Breast Cancer Spotlight Series seminar, featuring Dr. William J. Muller, Professor of Biochemistry at McGill University. Dr. Muller will present Oncogene-Mediated Signaling in Transgenic Mouse Models of Human Breast Cancer. The seminar is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27 at 12:00 pm in SOM W331. FUNDING OPPORTUNITY– Clinical Research Scholar Career Development Training ProgramThe Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Training Program seeks outstanding candidates to fill five Clinical Research (CR) Scholar positions available in July 2010. The training program is funded by the NIH and it is a component of the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative. This innovative program is a collaboration involving CWRU, Cleveland Clinic, UH and MetroHealth. Each CR Scholar will embark on a 4-year program of intensive training in multidisciplinary team-based, patient-oriented research, combining a novel educational program with mentored research experiences.
