My lab is studying the role of long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) in colon and breast cancer. Specifically, we have recently identified a set of lincRNAs and mRNA that are specifically regulated by the oncogene HER2, in HER2-positive breast cancer in cell culture and in vivo (Merry et al, Breast Cancer Research & Treatment, 2015). We are also collaborating with Dr Markowitz on elucidating the function and mechanism of a lincRNA that is highly repressed in colon cancer, but it exerts a tumor suppressor effect when re-expressed in colon cancer cells.
