ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dr. Madabhushi Awarded Breast Cancer Grant from Ohio Third Frontier

Dr. Anant Madabhushi has been awarded a one-year, $50,000 Phase 1 Technology Validation grant from the Ohio Third Frontier program for his project, Image Based Risk Score Predictor of Treatment Response from ER+ Breast Cancers. As part of this project, Dr. Madabhushi and his team will be developing advanced image analytic methods for distinguishing more and less aggressive estrogen receptor positive breast cancers and thus identifying which patients should receive adjuvant chemotherapy and which patients should not. Drs. Hannah Gilmore and Lyndsay Harris will serve as the clinical collaborators on this project.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

CTSC Explorys Collaborative Pilot

Applications are currently being accepted by the Clinical & Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) for Explorys Collaborative Pilot funding. The purpose of this pilot funding opportunity is to innovate and collaborate with Explorys informatics personnel to develop novel or enhance existing approaches for expanding the use of BIG DATA in organizing, integrating, searching, analyzing, or visualizing health care data. Successful applications will involve two or more disciplines, with a focus on building innovative clinical research informatics, aligned with a key Explorys focus area as listed above and allocate no more than a third of the budget on supporting development efforts or analysis by Explorys.
Deadline: August 1

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Uniting Against Lung Cancer is accepting applications for its Legacy Program. The Foundation is prioritizing novel ideas with potential to make a significant impact on current treatment of lung cancer and patient survival, adding years rather than months. High priority has been placed on funding research that has a clear path to clinical application and/or therapeutic development. Proposals for basic science are greatly aided by a forward-looking research plan outlining clinical potential. Investigators at all levels, including Postdoctoral and Clinical Fellows, will be funded through the Legacy Program and are encouraged to apply.
Deadline: August 14

Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program

Applications to the Fiscal Year 2013 Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) are being solicited for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Defense Health Program, by the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisitions Activity.

  • The PCRP Collaborative Undergraduate Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Student Summer Training Program Award mechanism supports the training of the next generation of prostate cancer researchers. This award funds new or existing summer training programs in prostate cancer research for undergraduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) at host institutions with ongoing prostate cancer research.
    LOI Deadline: August 15
    Application Deadline: September 5
  • The PCRP Exploration-Hypothesis Development Award supports the exploration of highly innovative, untested, potentially high-gain concepts, theories, paradigms, and/or methods that address an important problem in prostate cancer. Results of studies conducted through this award may provide the scientific rationale upon which a new hypothesis can be based or initial proof-of-principle of an innovative hypothesis.
    LOI Deadline: July 10
    Application Deadline: July 31
  • The PCRP Health Disparity Research Award supports new ideas based on innovative concepts or methodologies for prostate cancer health disparity research with the potential to make an important contribution toward eliminating death from prostate cancer and enhancing the well-being of men impacted by the disease.
    LOI Deadline: September 18
    Application Deadline: October 9
  • The PCRP Physician Research Training Awardsupports a mentored training experience to prepare physicians with clinical duties and/or responsibilities for productive careers in prostate cancer research. This award emphasizes equally the quality of both the research and the training proposed.
    LOI Deadline: August 15
    Application Deadline: September 5
  • The PCRP Population Science Impact Awardmechanism supports high-impact, population science approaches to prostate cancer research. Applications should clearly demonstrate the potential of the study to contribute significantly to the elimination of death from prostate cancer and/or enhancing the well-being of men experiencing the impact of the disease.
    LOI Deadline: September 18
    Application Deadline: October 9
  • The Postdoctoral Training Award supports prostate cancer research training opportunities for recent doctoral graduates. These awards primarily provide salary support for the Principal Investigator (PI); the postdoctoral trainee is considered the PI of the application. The PI must exhibit strong potential for, and commitment to, pursuing a career as an investigator at the forefront of prostate cancer research; however, the PI is not required to have previous prostate cancer research experience.
    LOI Deadline: August 15
    Application Deadline: September 5

Foundation for Women's Cancer

The Foundation for Women's Cancer is accepting applications for 2013-2014 research grants and awards.

The awardees will have made important contributions that improve gynecologic cancer patient care, including early detection.
    Deadline: October 23
  • The Dr. John L. Lewis, Jr./William F. O'Connor Foundation Research Prize will be awarded to a fellow or resident who has promise to contribute to the field of gynecologic oncology in the future.
    Deadline: October 23
  • Perlman Family CCARE Lynch Syndrome Research Prize will award a stipend for a trainee to support a summer or short-term research project that advances knowledge about Lynch Syndrome and its role in gynecologic cancers. The successful applicant must submit a short summary of the projects goals and expected outcomes co-signed by the applicant's mentor and supervisor.
