American Association for Cancer Research

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is accepting applications for the following opportunities:

  • The Landon Foundation-AACR INNOVATOR Award for Cancer Prevention Research was established to recognize the outstanding achievement of a junior faculty-level scientist working in the field of cancer prevention, and support his or her novel and innovative research that, if successful, will have strong potential for high impact in the cancer prevention field. The goals of the grant program are to encourage an outstanding, creative young investigator to pursue novel, high-risk, high-reward cancer prevention research by providing the support that otherwise may not be available through traditional funding. Travel support is included to help foster interactions among cancer scientists working in various disciplines and to disseminate scientific knowledge about cancer prevention research throughout the field.
    Deadline: November 20
  • The AACR-National Brain Tumor Society Career Development Award for Translational Brain Tumor Research represents a joint effort to encourage and support junior faculty who are in the first five years of a faculty appointment (at the start of the grant term) to conduct brain tumor research and establish successful career paths in this field. The research proposed for funding must be translational in nature and have direct applicability and relevance to brain tumors.
    Deadline: November 30
CTSC Explorys Collaborative Pilot

The CTSC is accepting applications for Explorys Collaborative Pilots. The purpose of this pilot funding opportunity is to innovate and collaborate with Explorys informatics personnel to develop novel or enhance existing approaches for expanding the use of BIG DATA in organizing, integrating, searching, analyzing, or visualizing health care data. Successful applications will involve two or more disciplines, with a focus on building innovative clinical research informatics, aligned with a key Explorys focus area as listed above and allocate no more than a third of the budget on supporting development efforts or analysis by Explorys.

Deadline: December 14

Measuring Biomarkers with Meso Scale Discovery

John Pink, PhD and Paul Hartman, MS of the Translational Research & Pharmacology Core Facility invite you to a presentation by Jim Kepka, Regional Director of Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) on Wednesday, November 14 at 12:30 pm in WRB 2-136. Light lunch will be provided.

Presentation and discussion will include:

  • Core Technology Overview
  • Assays for Cytokines, Intracellular Signaling & Metabolic markers
  • Phase-gated Process for Assay Development and QC

Please RSVP to John Hudson at or 630.547.5148. MSD offers a diverse product line of biomarker assays including many oncology-focused kits. They feature phospho-protein and intracellular signaling assay kits designed for use with whole cell lysates and others complex matrices. Clinical biomarker assays for analysis of serum, plasma and tissue culture samples are also available.

Cancer Care Video Challenge

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), invites cancer patients, survivors, and their families and friends to create short, compelling videos sharing a personal story that describes a goal of a cancer patient or survivor, and how technology (such as health IT or consumer eHealth tools) is used to support meeting that goal. There are a variety of tools and applications that can be used to help patients and their families navigate the various aspects of living with or transitioning from cancer treatment to survivorship.

The purpose of the challenge is to generate videos that will inspire and motivate others to become more engaged in their care, through the use of consumer e-health tools and other health IT to improve communication and collaboration with their health care team (doctors, nurses, and other allied health care professionals), and better manage their cancer-related care.

The deadline to submit a video is December 21. Cash prizes are available to the winners.
