CCSG Wrap-up

The grant is complete and was sent to the NCI Thursday evening. As is necessarily the case for a 1600 page document, this effort was the work of over 85 people who directly contributed by writing, editing, collecting data, and verifying elements of the grant. It looks great, and we are well represented by the grant. Great care has been taken to align, cross reference, format, and highlight our strengths and accomplishments.

I greatly appreciate all of the time and effort everyone took from their normal routines, and how much time this has involved for each of us. It has been worth it because the consolidated presentation showcases an outstanding cancer center that represents an exceptional effort to coordinate cancer research across our consortium. It has been an extraordinary process, and one that helps us clarify our joint priorities.

Now that the Memorial Day holiday is complete, we move on to preparations for the site visit. As you all get back to your normal routine, please keep the Cancer Center in mind. There at so many opportunities to take advantage of Cancer Center infrastructure and members to promote collaborative efforts. Program leaders would do well to have program meetings and retreats over the next months, and to promote team science projects. Clinical investigators are strongly encouraged to accrue patents to existing trials and to develop new trials.

I look forward to a very positive reception from NCI reviewers, and our continued growth as a center!

Uniting Against Lung Cancer

Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) announces funding opportunities for research aimed at improved treatment and a cure for lung cancers. The Foundation is prioritizing novel ideas with potential to make a significant impact on current treatment of lung cancer and patient survival, adding years rather than months. They have placed high priority on funding research that has a clear path to clinical application and/or therapeutic development. Proposals for basic science are greatly aided by a forward-looking research plan outlining clinical potential. UALC funding is intended primarily as seed money for promising and potentially transformative new projects, rather than funding projects that already receive considerable support. Cross discipline collaborations are strongly encouraged. Proposals do not require large amounts of preliminary data, but must have a clear hypothesis and research plan to be completed within the two year grant term.

Deadline: August 15
