FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESAmerican Association for Cancer Research Awards and Lectureships
The American Association for Cancer Research is currently accepting nominations for its annual series of awards and lectureships. Since 1961, when the first scientific award was presented, the AACR has honored hundreds of scientists and physicians who collectively have made significant contributions to the understanding, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer. Recipients will be honored at the AACR Annual Meeting 2013, which will be held April 6-10, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The awards and lectureships are:
Nomination Deadline for all awards: October 3.Melanoma Research Alliance-Prostate Cancer Foundation Team Science Partnership Award
Applications are solicited by the Melanoma Research Alliance and the Prostate Cancer Foundation for one jointly sponsoredTeam Science Award that will simultaneously advance clinical science in both diseases. This award will support innovative, meritorious and translational work with the potential for high clinical impact in prostate cancer and melanoma. The following are examples of investigative areas relevant to both kinds of cancer, for which applications will be considered: 1) nuclear imaging technologies and/or applications as early predictors of treatment outcomes, including novel tracers to distinguish immune from tumor cells in the context of immunotherapy; 2) therapeutic interventions targeting tumor cell metabolism and protein translation; and 3) development of effective combinatorial therapies in the adjuvant or advanced disease setting, based on immune-modulating drugs paired with other agents.

ANNOUNCEMENTSMaciejewski Receives Funding from Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
Jaroslaw Maciejewski, MD, PhD received a grant from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This grant is part of the their Translational Research Program, an initiative designed to help accelerate the movement of promising discoveries from the lab to the clinic. Dr. Maciejewski will receive $200,000 for three years to study the implications of STAT3 mutations in large granular lymphocyte leukemia.Cultural Competency Training Resources
Cultural competency training is available for Cleveland Clinic employees through the Cleveland Clinic Office of Diversity and Inclusion and for University Hospitals employees through the online Learning Management System (access via UH Intranet home page, click on Human Resources, then click on Employee Direct Access, see "2012 Resident Orientation Cultural Competency").
Additional training and resources are available from RTOG. RTOG conducted a session on Cultural Competency and Recruitment Training in June 2011, which is available on theRTOG website. This session consists of four modules, module 3 being the most useful. This module consists of several role-playing scenarios that emphasize principles important to recruitment of underserved populations.
