Leadership Change: Associate Director for Shared Resources

As of the New Year, James Jacobberger, PhD has retired from his position as Associate Director for Shared Resources of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a position he has held since 2002. He will remain active in the Cancer Center, as Emeritus Professor of Oncology, and will continue to direct the Cytometry and Imaging Microscopy Core Facility.

Jim was initially recruited to the School of Medicine in 1985, to what was then the Department of Developmental Genetics and Anatomy, with one of his directives being to establish a flow cytometry resource on campus.  That Jim succeeded in this endeavor is testimony to his dedication and perseverance. Not only did he  establish a core facility that has become a major institutional resource, receiving outstanding reviews from NCI review committees since 1987, he built a strong, well regarded research program as well.  His expertise is sought after, and he is known as an excellent research collaborator, advisor, and teacher. Over the years, he has provided countless hours of service to the CWRU and national scientific community.  He has demonstrated the great benefit to science provided by cutting edge technology, and more importantly, how one's own research interests can deepen the commitment to providing the best core services to other scientists.  Please join me in thanking Jim for his past contributions, and we look forward to many more.

Late last year Jim passed the baton to Chris Flask, PhD, Associate Professor of Radiology, Biomedical Engineering and Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, who was appointed as the new Associate Director for Shared Resources as of January 1, 2016. Many of you know Chris as Director of the Cancer Imaging Core Facility.  Chris has embraced this new position enthusiastically, and welcomes comments about our core facilities.

PRMC Leadership Changes

I also wish to thank Henry Koon, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine-Hematology and Oncology, CWRU School of Medicine and Melanoma Disease Team Leader, UH Case Medical Center, for his service to the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC). Henry served as co-Chair and Chair of the PRMC since 2012, and stepped down as of December 31, 2015. PRMC members will miss his knowledge, expertise and a sense of humor.

As of January 1, 2016, we welcome Jorge Garcia, MD, Assistant Professor, Hematology and Oncology, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of CWRU and medical oncologist at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, as PRMC Chair and David Mansur, MD, Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and Pediatrics, CWRU School of Medicine and Division Chief of Radiation Oncology, UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, as PRMC Co-Chair. We are looking forward to working with both of them in the New Year and beyond.
